Opened in 1989, the History Museum of Hillsborough County was originally founded by a local Tampa man, J. Thomas Touchton. The museum has since moved twice, first to the convention center, then to Fort Brooke Park in 2009. The most recent move was a difficult one, because the museum faced a long battle to raise the funds needed to keep the museum open. Eventually, Hillsborough County Commissioners agreed to approve $17 million to build a permanent home for the center.

The exhibit, “Cuban Pathways,” traces the history of the island through the centuries, from the Spanish conquistadors to the first immigrants and independence leaders seeking freedom.
